Before Rosa Parks Claudette Colvin was 15 years old when she refused to give up her seat to a white woman during segregation in Montgomery, Alabama. I remember reading she found the courage to stand up by learning about Harriet Tubman and others during Negro History Week. It seems she was not chosen as the face of the boycotting the buses because she was too young, emotional and pregnant. However, her actions did play a significant role in the movement. Just as the youth have played a role in the recent protests over police brutality of black lives. She is still alive and she deserves to be honored.
