Born Emily Bryant October 14, 1927 in Oakland California she was known as "The Black Marilyn Monroe" and "The Bronze Bombshell.

She was the first dark-skinned black woman to be a national sex symbol and she could sing at a 45 octave range.

At 28 years old she quit show business (refusing to be its next victim), she turned to religion and reemerged reinvented as a trained classical artist 10 years later as a leading lady in the NY city opera touring internationally.

It is also interesting to note that she was the vocal coach for Phyllis Hyman and Jennifer Holliday.

She is still living to this day, she is 92 years old.
